Your Concrete Project, Step by Step
Hiring a concrete contractor for the first time can feel overwhelming. What's the process? How long does it take? What do you need to prepare? Here's a clear walkthrough of what to expect when you work with a professional concrete contractor.
Step 1: Initial Consultation and Estimate
It all starts with a phone call or online inquiry. A reputable contractor will visit your property, discuss your vision, take measurements, evaluate soil and drainage conditions, and provide a detailed written estimate. At McCaslin Concrete, we offer free on-site consultations and typically deliver estimates within 48 hours of our visit. This is also the time to ask questions about materials, timelines, and any concerns you have.
Step 2: Scheduling and Preparation
Once you approve the estimate, we'll schedule your project based on weather conditions and our current workload. You'll receive a clear timeline and instructions on any preparation needed on your end — like moving vehicles, clearing the work area, or marking sprinkler lines and underground utilities.
Step 3: Site Preparation and Formwork
On the day work begins, the crew will excavate the area, grade the subsoil, compact the base material, and set forms. This preparation phase is critical — it's the foundation beneath your concrete and determines how well the finished product performs for decades to come. Depending on the project size, site prep may take one full day.
Step 4: The Pour
Concrete is delivered by mixer truck and poured into the prepared forms. The crew works quickly to spread, level, and finish the concrete before it begins to set. For stamped or decorative projects, color and patterns are applied during this phase. The pour day is exciting to watch — it's where the project comes together.
Step 5: Curing and Final Walkthrough
After the pour, concrete needs time to cure — typically 24-48 hours before foot traffic and 7 days before vehicle traffic. Full strength is reached at approximately 28 days. We'll apply a curing compound, remove forms, and do a final walkthrough with you to make sure everything meets your expectations. We'll also provide care instructions to help your new concrete last for years to come.
How Long Does the Whole Process Take?
From first call to finished project, most residential concrete projects take 2-4 weeks including scheduling time. The actual on-site work typically takes 2-5 days depending on the project size and complexity. Weather can affect the timeline — we never pour in conditions that could compromise quality.
